  49. The Heathkit WWV clock has a serial output. I'd like to know how I can
  50. hook this up to Linux so other machines can set their clocks
  51. accurately (ie using rdate or xntp over packet or on the local
  52. ethernet LAN).  I have code for something called "DCF" which is a
  53. German radio.  Is this compatible or do I need something else? If the
  54. DCF stuff is compatible, I see that the Linux patches are quite old,
  55. and the serial port line discipline code has changed drastically, has
  56. anyone updated the patches?

  72. I'm using a Baycom and its software and my Icom IC-2AT HT. Pretty cheap setup.
  73. You should be able to do the same or similiar. The Baycom SW is only for
  74. the PC types.  I also have a Mac Plus at home, but it's at home in WA and
  75. I'm here in CT.

  104. I just got rid of a MacSE I had used for three years on the INTERNET.IT WAS
  105. A REAL GEM.Sorry about the caps.Right now I am using the PowerPc 6100 .To
  106. answer your questioin I would get the pk88 TNC from AEA and their program
  107. MacRATT which is a Mac version packet program.Then get yourself a dipole or
  108. whatever and look for a locak hf amtor or pactor around 14069-14075 in your
  109. local area.I just got on packet about seven days ago on vhf, much
  110. easier,and am waiting for hf because I live in an apt bldg and have
  111. restricted antenna space.I am currently using the AEA isoloop inside,not
  112. too successfully and am trying to find a way to stick  it outside.Getting
  113. on packet is pretty simple.Good luck.

  131. working a weak Cuban a few years back. W1AW came screaming right over us 
  132. without so much as a howdy-do. Silly me, answering a CQ on a code practice/
  133. bulletin freq.

  208. The point made above is a good one, and one I have been reflecting on 
  209. myself, following various happenings here in the UK.

  211. Throw this thought into the metling pot: Has the advent of easy dial
  212. international phone calls - in my time as a licensed amateur - made hf
  213. ssb dx working a thing of the past?

  215. I am slowly tending towards the idea that we would be making a mistake 
  216. trying to emulate the internet; but should perhaps emphasise a little 
  217. more the "radio" part of amateur radio.

  221. (You don't know me, so let me give you a little of my background, if
  222. it helps to put my comments in context: professionally I work in the
  223. networking industry, writing operating systems et al for embedded
  224. processors in bridges and routers. I am on the internet from work and
  225. home, so I don't think I am a luddite. On the amateur radio side, I
  226. was first licensed in 1972 and currently operate both vhf packet -
  227. only AX25 at the moment, but that's about to change - and hf cw, and
  228. see no great conflict in enjoying such different aspects of our
  229. wonderful hobby.)

  245. Given that most (and it should be all) ampr.org addresses are known to
  246. the internet, why not just do a domain look-up on your call? I can get a
  247. response if I query g4wrw.ampr.org, and it is correct as well!

  249. If you aren't there, then prod your local coordinator to find out why it
  250. hasn't been registered (assuming you have allowed a reasonable time to 
  251. elapse first!!!!)
